The Pecos River

The Pecos River begins high up in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains (over 12,000 feet) in New Mexico and travels south for 926 miles before it meets up with the Rio Grande very near Seminole Canyon State Park in Texas. State Road 63 in New Mexico, north of Pecos, takes you through the Pecos Canyon where you can rock climb the tall cliffs, camp among the walls and river, hike, and fish. It is one of my favorite places to fish in the Land of Enchantment. The Pecos also goes right alongside Pecos National Historical Park and the Battle of Glorietta Pass site. The river then goes down what’s known as the Pecos River Valley which features heavily in my Billy the Kid & The Lincoln County War series. The Pecos River also forms the western boundary of parts of the Llano Estacado. The Pecos River is full of history and I love to fish it.
